Formal Court Hearing
[School District Name]
Formal Court Hearing Notification – Habitual Truancy
Dear Parent/Guardian of <<student_name>>,
This letter is to inform you that <<student_name>> has either:
Reached the 72-hour threshold for Habitual Truancy, or
Failed to make satisfactory progress in the attendance intervention process.
As a result, the school district will now be filing a formal complaint with the local juvenile court regarding your child’s attendance.
Under Ohio law, the primary responsibility for ensuring school attendance lies with the child’s parent or guardian. The law also requires school districts to enforce compulsory attendance laws and implement intervention strategies when students accumulate excessive or unexcused absences.
A student is legally classified as Habitually Truant if they are absent from school, without a legitimate excuse, for:
30 consecutive school hours
42 hours in a school month
72 hours in a school year
Please understand that unresolved attendance concerns may result in court involvement, which can carry legal consequences for both the student and/or parent or guardian.
The district appreciates your cooperation and attentiveness to all communications regarding your child’s attendance. We remain committed to working together to support your child’s success and to prevent further disciplinary or legal action.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please contact the school office at <<school_phone_number>>.
Yours in Education,
